With the introduction of Malay crosses, and a lot of skill from British fanciers, the Modern Game was evolved. Black-red, duckwings, brown-reds, piles and birchens were the original recognised varieties, the general characteristics being the same for each, and 13 colours are now standardised.
Characteristics Male Carriage: Upstanding and active. In the show pen the bird should show plenty of ‘lift’, as if reaching to its fullest height. Type: Body short, flat back, wide front and tapering to the tail, shaped like an iron. Shoulders prominent and carried well up. Wings short and strong. Tail short, fine, closely whipped together, carried slightly above the level of the body, the sickles narrow, well pointed and only slightly curved. Head: Long, snaky and narrow between the eyes. Beak long, gracefully curved and strong at the base. Eyes prominent. Comb single, small, upright, of fine texture, evenly serrated. Face smooth, earlobes and wattles fine and small, to match the comb. Neck: Long and slight;y arched, fitted with ;wiry; feathers but thin at the junction with the body. Legs and feet: Legs long and well rounded. Thighs muscular. Shanks free from feathers. Toes, four, long, fine and straight, the fourth (hind) toe straight out and flat on the ground, not downwards against the ball of the foot. Plumage: Short and hard.
Female Similar to the male, allowing for normal sexual differences.
Colours Birchen, black-red,brown-red, gold duckwing,silver duckwing, pile, wheaten, black, blue, white, blue-red, silver blue, lemon blue. In both sexes: birchen; beak very dark horn, black preferred. Eyes black. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes mulberry (Gypsy-faced) and as dark as possible. Legs and feet black. Black-red; beak dark green. Eyes, comb, face. Wattles and earlobes bright red. Legs willow. Brown-red; beak very dark horn, black preferred. Eyes, comb, face, wattles and earlobes mulberry and as dark as possible. Legs and feet black. Gold duckwing; beak dark horn, eyes ruby red. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes red. Legs and feet willow. Silver duckwing: as in gold duckwing. Pile: beak yellow, eyes bright cherry-red. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes red. Legs and feet rich orange yellow. Wheaten: beak yellowish horn. Eyes, comb, face, wattles and earlobes red. Legs willow, often showing yellowish soles – a distinguishing mark of the wheaten. Black: beak black, eyes black. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes mulberry and as dark as possible. Legs and feet black. Blue: beak black or blue. Eyes black. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes mulberry and as dark as possible, legs and feet black or blue. White: beak yellow, eyes, comb, face, wattles and earlobes red. Legs and feet yellow. Blue-red: beak horn, eyes, comb, face, wattles and earlobes red. Legs and feet willow. Silver blue: beak black or blue. Eyes black. Comb, face, wattles and earlobes mulberry, as dark as possible. Legs and feet black or blue. Lemon blue: as for blue.
